Making the decision to swap pallets for slip sheets is only the first step. Badger Paperboard’s push-pull sheets cost just $2-$3 each, compared with $15 for a traditional wooden pallet. The cost savings can be a no-brainer, but the next step is figuring out how to implement them into your workflow.
Most guides stop at why to switch. Below, we’ll cover what actually changes on your dock, and what processes to lock in before your first load ships.
Quick Gut Check: Is Your Operation Ready?
Slip sheets work best for uniform, stackable loads in high-volume lanes, and your receivers need push-pull equipment to handle them. Before you commit, run through this checklist:
- Your loads are uniform and stackable. Odd shapes or uneven stacking make slip sheets harder to secure without a pallet deck underneath.
- You’re running high-volume lanes. The equipment investment pays off fastest when you’re moving consistent volume, not one-off shipments.
- Your existing forklifts can support a push-pull attachment. Match the attachment to your fleet’s hydraulic capabilities before you order equipment.
The Workflow Shift, Step by Step
- Building the load. Center the sheet, keep the scored tab clear, and orient tabs the same way every time. Combined with stretch wrap and BadgerKorner edge protectors, they can do more of the work of holding the load together. Label every slip-sheeted load.
- Moving and staging. Slip sheets work with forklifts that support push-pull attachments, so plan dedicated staging areas for slip-sheeted loads. These loads are usually floor-stacked or need rack support, so confirm your rack setup is ready to go before your first slip-sheeted load arrives.
- Receiving and unloading. The push-pull attachment works through five steps: Reach, Grip, Pull, Lift, Level. At the destination, it either pushes the load off with the sheet or holds the sheet back.
- Loading trailers. At 1/20th the weight of a wooden pallet, push-pull sheets reduce freight weight and help maximize trailer space. Orient tabs so the receiver’s crew can grab loads easily.
The Equipment You’ll Use
Push-pull attachments come in three common types: dedicated attachments for full-time use, fork-mounted models for part-time use, and hybrid models that handle both slip sheets and pallets. Whichever you choose, make sure it matches your forklift’s hydraulic specs.
Badger makes the sheets, not the attachments, so your equipment dealer is the right call for those. We’ll make sure the sheets are right for the job. Running an automated line? Your Day-One Checklist
- Spec the sheet to the load. Match the tab size, tab count, and thickness (0.018pt to 0.200pt) to your load, and ask about moisture-resistant options if your loads face humid conditions, refrigerated or frozen temperatures, or export shipping.
- Standardize tab placement. Use the same orientation on every shift so every operator handles it the same way.
- Train before the first live load. Request samples so operators can practice on the real thing.
- Tighten load securement. Wrap, strapping, and corner protection replace the pallet deck.
- Loop in carriers and receivers. Tell them before the first shipment arrives, not after.
- Pilot one lane. Start small and keep pallets on standby.
- Store sheets flat and dry. Good storage keeps the tabs grabbable.
What to Watch For in Week One
- If a tab tears: Check the sheet thickness and the grip pressure.
- If a load won’t slide: Check the floor surface.
- If a load shifts in transit: Check the wrap pattern, and consider adding tier sheets or anti-slip sheets.
